Awareness, Resources & Support
Spotlight on Recovery is a recurring support group offered by Drug Crisis in Our Backyard, with an interactive forum for family support and education. See our Support Groups Page.
Drug Crisis in Our Backyard is a community action organization dedicated to raising awareness, and providing education to families and individuals struggling with addiction. The organization was originally started in 2012 by Susan and Steven Salomone, and Carol and Lou Christiansen after they lost their sons to a battle with addiction. You can read their story, and full background of the organization in the About Us section.
We believe that by coming together, by bringing the issue of addiction out into the open, we can provide the strength and support of a community to beat what is a terrible and life-threatening illness. We arrange a variety of events throughout the year, take a look at our events section to find out more.
Are you, or someone you love, struggling with addiction? Please see our extensive list of resources for drug rehabilitation.
What is Addiction?
We have many resources on this website to give readers more information about the issues and signs of addiction. The article below is just one example. It details the struggle of one individual dealing with the illness of addiction. Click here to enlarge.

Come Out and Be Counted
Unfortunately, we have had 4 overdoses in the first quarter of the year in Putnam County. It isn’t that we have more drugs here or that our citizens are more likely to use drugs, it simply is that our country is under siege. We have a drug epidemic of astronomical propositions. I have heard people call it the Black Plague.
The bigger it gets the more important it is for us to step up to the plate and do something about it. We are actively meeting with other groups and speaking to anyone that will listen. It is our mission to keep this movement going. Please take a look at our events page and come out to show your support. We need each and every one of you, to make sure this issue stays in the public eye. It’s the only way that we can help each other and save our children.
We’re pleased to report the implementation of one of the laws signed June 23, 2014 by Governor Cuomo:
Insurance companies cannot use “Fail First” and must expedite appeals as follows:
April 1, 2015 - All commercial insurance companies must comply
July 1, 2015 – All Medicaid NYC plans must comply
January 1, 2016 - All other Medicaid plans must comply
If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction and needs help, in addition to reaching out through our organization, please reach out to either the Putnam County Crisis Hotline at 845-225-1222 or the HopeLine at 877-846-7369.
